BEHIND THE MASK

Masking is the act of concealing parts of the stage from the audience by using scenery.

Masking is a shop and a platform founded in 2020 by Ilaria Martello as a response to the global crisis caused by Covid-19. It is a collective space created to share our mask-wearing experiences, both on and off the stage. It’s a place to have deep yet playful conversations and pose thought-provoking questions.

Ilaria Martello has managed the production of hundreds of costumes for ballet, opera and dance for almost two decades and has worked with numerous designers, artists, performers and technicians during that time.

For the best part of 2020, theatres have been masked completely from audiences, as the backdrop of lockdown closed their doors and furloughed thousands of staff across the UK.

Today the theatre doors remain mostly locked, with performances streamed to stem the flow and feed the passions, yet not providing a sustainable life for many theatre workers and performers.

SUPPORT. CONNECT. ENGAGE. PARTICIPATE. INSPIRE.

All the masks are made in London and all the profit from the sales will be donated to the Theatre Artists Fund.
